Nicole Etienne: Menagerie

February 12 - February 24, 2015

Space SBH presents Menagerie - an exhibition of new paintings by artist Nicole Etienne.

Menagerie (noun), meaning:

  • a strange or diverse collection of people or things.
  • collection of captive animals, frequently exotic, kept for display; or the place where such a collection is kept, a precursor to the modern zoological garden.
  • used primarily in reference to aristocratic or royal animal collections.
  • according to the French-language "Methodical Encyclopedia" of 1782 defines a menagerie as an "establishment of luxury and curiosity."
  • the term evolved to refer also to travelling animal collections that exhibited wild animals at fairs across Europe and the Americas.
  • motifs of shells and twisted rope, as well as a menagerie of real and fictitious sea creatures with fish tails also emphasize the maritime theme.

In this series of paintings, Etienne has created her own menagerie –  a sumptuous feast of animals, colour, beauty and opulence, as is characteristic of her style. These imaginative pieces are wild and exciting. The compositions mix these exotic animals set in what would otherwise be ordinary but elegant interiors, setting the scene for the animals to bring a beautiful chaos.

Etienne lives and works between California and London. Her work is regularly exhibited internationally and found in some of the most discerning collections.

Show runs 12th -24th February 2015. Private viewing by appointment. Commissioned work possible. For all enquiries please contact [email protected]
