The artist Victor Matthews and his Utopia Series at Space Gallery St Barth.
How do you express your style (inspiration)?
Victor Matthews: Over the years I find it harder to describe my work, I think because it is a feeling. It's a feeling that; if I could describe it, I would have been a writer! I don't think before or after while I'm working, I get in a creative mind space and just let the work develop organically. I play with the tones
of sand and light because I don't believe in color. Tones are more reactive for me instead of bright colors. Some people are attracted to bright and different tones, but the tones I chose are very calming, relaxing and fulfilling.
Can you tell us about your first encounter with Eden Rock - St Barths and your collaboration...
Victor Matthews: My first encounter with Eden Rock – St Barths was after the recent wonderful restoration in 2018. I was introduced to the Eden Rock program by Natalie Clifford, who is the director and owner of the gallery, Space Gallery St Barth. Natalie works closely with Pierre-Marie who runs the art program and explained to me the plans for their 70th anniversary. The new Eden Rock tones and design is a great fit for my work.
My work is exhibited in various rooms in the hotel and the painting I did for the anniversary, in October, is a unique wall painting... like a modern fresco, and very unusual for me. Because, instead of my signature tones, I have painted in shades of Eden Rock’s signature red. A first for me... I was very impatient to create this very special work on the theme of youngsters benefitting from the island's beauty and nature.
One word to define Eden Rock?
Victor Matthews: Harmony - being located on top of a wonderful spiritual rock where I feel at peace.
