Christophe Jacrot has long magnified what he himself calls “bad weather.” Climate change has gradually changed the situation in recent years: “The climate seems to be collapsing around us. Every downpour can become a deadly deluge, flying becomes a climate-killing act,” he emphasizes, evoking his nostalgia for “normal bad weather.”
Far from seeking the sensationalism of extreme weather phenomena, Christophe Jacrot thus remains faithful to a “more everyday, aesthetic and narrative” register. And in doing so, he increasingly feels like he is documenting a disappearing world and becoming a “climate archaeologist.”
After immortalizing metropolises in the rain (Paris, New York, Hong Kong), Christophe Jacrot turned to the vast snowy landscapes of Iceland, the Faroe Islands or Siberia, before rediscovering France and Switzerland close to home, always with this romantic dimension that seems to animate each of his shots.
The result is a deeply poetic work, where the solitude of the photographer dialogues with the power of the natural elements. Despite a theme that may seem austere, a mysterious, soothing and captivating beauty emerges from each of his photographs, which earned him the nickname "Pope of bad weather".
His exhibition at the Space Gallery SOHO will transport us from Paris to New York, via Greenland.
About the Photographer
Born in 1960, Christophe Jacrot first became known in cinema with several short films, most of which won awards, and a feature film that gave Elie Kakou his last role. He then chose to devote himself entirely to photography, an art he had been practicing since adolescence. He developed an artistic project on bad weather, with a first series devoted to the city of Paris. This would lead to the publication of his first book and lead to his first gallery exhibition. Since then, no fewer than six books have been published: Paris sous la pluie (Le Chêne, 2008); Météores (Hartpon, 2015); Snórj (Hartpon, 2016), reissued in 2017 by Hartpon and in 2023 by Le Chêne; N.Y. in black (Hartpon, 2017); Neiges (Hartpon, 2019); Strong waters (Hemeria, 2022); Lost in Bad Weather (teNeues, 2023).
