About the artist Rémy de Haenen
Remy de Haenen is a French artist, born in Martinique, which he called home, along with St Barth, until he was 17 years old. Descendant of a family that arrived in the islands centuries ago, his childhood was deeply marked and influenced by the cultural diversity, freedom, colors, sea, sky, and creatures of the Islands, in particular, St Barth and his family’s long legacy there.
The artist moved to Paris to study, and then to New York City in the 1960s, where he attended New York University and the Art Student League. There he had the opportunity to meet Salvador Dalí and other artists linked to the work of Andy Warhol which stimulated his inner artist. Today he lives and works in Argentina, and in recent years has developed a more formal approach to his artistic search, always guided by the memories and influences of the islands where he spent his youth.
Remy de Haenen’s works are imagined scenes related to his islands, nature, memories, pastimes, and the contrast between childhood and adult life. There is an emotional communion between the people, the air, the clouds, the sea, the colors, and the tropics that occupy space and time in his works. His most recent series evolve a method of expression to bring him closer to dialogues with Pop Art painters for whom he has a deep affinity.
De Haenen is a creator of other series that reflect his passions and the events that have left an unforgettable mark on his life. As a trained Engineer with a curious mind, his inclination and familiarity with all kinds of machines allow him to experiment with materials from acrylics to aeronautical aluminum, creating 3D works that reflect his desire to fly and pierce clouds, or simply float in the sea or in the air (he is also an airplane pilot). His sculptural works normally involve an engineering element developed from a wild idea that he brings into being.
De Haenen’s works can be found in collections in Europe, Hong Kong, Argentina, and the USA/Caribbean.
Some career highlights: He has exhibited at BADA (Buenos Aires Directo de Artistas) in both 2015 and 2017; as well as a solo exhibition “Panic Attack” in 2018 Buenos Aires. “St Barth an Tan Lontan”: a solo exhibition at Studio 1314 in 2019 which then traveled to the Musée du Wall House St Barth in 2020.
His work is permanently exhibited at galleries Casa Quintana and Bristol in Buenos Aires and he is regularly exhibited at Space Gallery St Barth on island and at its Soho New York location.
