Walking into The Langham Hotel in London, I didn’t expect this intimate luncheon to feel like entering an immersive gallery, but from the moment I arrived, everything from the table setting, light, and food felt thoughtfully curated. Surrounded by new faces, art enthusiasts, friends, and family, we were all there to take in and celebrate Isabelle Binder-Lindbergh’s photography series titled Between Realms.

The room was encircled by the photographs as the large windows welcomed natural light to truly capture the serene, otherworldly essence of the photographs on view. I was struck by the rooms’ elegance, with tables in the center of the room covered in white tablecloths and small food platters with wine to accompany the luncheon. During the event, I had the pleasure of speaking with Binder-Lindbergh herself and her New York and Saint Barth gallerist, Natalie Clifford, who founded Space Gallery in 2011, and gave me a deeper dive into the process of taking these pictures and the greater meaning they all have.

Binder-Lindbergh, a French-German photographer, has taken inspiration from her background as a pilot to highlight the movement of air in all her work. She uses a signature silver veil that appears throughout her collection to connect the series while simultaneously harnessing the invisible. Binder-Lindbergh mentioned in a speech how this veil felt almost protective of the strong female protagonist in the photos and how the soft, feminine features juxtaposed with the vast landscape surrounding her. The sky body, and it’s clouds, the press release states, form a “subtle dialogue between humanity and immensity, a visual echo of her silver veil that traverses her shots like a living metaphor.

The idea behind some of her work of being “one with nature” tends to ground people; however, there is also a sense of being transported to another world, as the areas in Iceland and Peru – where these are taken – have such unique visuals that not many have personally experienced. Clifford also spoke about how the pictures in Peru, taken 5000 meters high up, represent a connection to culture and faith, and how the black & white gradient invites a space for imagination and power.

Between Realms was first on view at Space Gallery in Saint Barth in December, then at a private residence in Saint-Moritz, and its current showcase in London, during Frieze week, was tethered to the luncheon, and in the evening a dinner. Cultbytes invitation came through Anna Carolina Hahn, a friend of Binder-Lindbergh and founder of the charity Friends of Nicolas and the female investor roundtable Gurls, among other things, who had flown in from Monaco to attend the event and other festivities. The exhibition format was a welcome respite from the main fairs during the busy week.

As we mingled and walked around, I took the time to really appreciate the photography for what it was. The three different sizes gave each image a different feel as some felt quite grand and others quite intimate. A small detail I had never encountered before was the choice of paper. Lindbergh had spent years finding a precise paper that gives off a metallic finish to bring out the colors, add depth, and give the picture an extra glimmer that will not age yellow over time. Even the titles, such as Mars and Determination, embrace the everlasting strength Lindbergh portrays.

As this luncheon drew to a close, I felt a wonderful sense of pure passion and talent showcased through this series. As a parting gift, we were given totebags with a book that displayed the collection in its entirety. This event succeeded in not only celebrating the art, but also celebrating the people who make it come alive.
