Space Gallery St Barth is proud to present The Light of Sand, a solo exhibition by Victor Matthews. This exhibition features a selection of works created over the past six years on the island of Saint Barthélemy, offering a sweeping view of Matthews’ evolution as an artist and his deepening engagement with the island’s natural and spiritual landscapes.
Through his signature palette of soft beige tones and bold black outlines, Matthews explores the quiet resonance between material and emotion. His paintings appear at once minimal and profoundly alive — meditations on form, light, and rhythm that reveal an inner landscape as much as an external one.
The exhibition’s title encapsulates Matthews’ poetic philosophy. He imagines the language that sand granules transmit when light reflects upon them, an invisible communication shimmering across the surface of the world. Through his paintings, Matthews seeks to transpose that language to canvas, creating what he calls a “hieroglyphic dance of rhythm and movement.”
Each composition feels like an inscription — an abstract text written not with words but with gestures, pigment, and subtle vibrations of consciousness. The interplay of beige tones and black contours evokes both earth and shadow, the tangible and ephemeral, the grounded and the spiritual.
My paintings start with charcoal drawings, applied directly on each linen canvas as one continuous stream of consciousness, never lifting the charcoal off the canvas until each thought is complete.
