Victor Matthews Events That Unfold, 2025,
Oil and graphite on canvas, 44 x 44 in (111.76 x 111.76 cm)
This season, Space Gallery St Barth celebrates its fifteenth year as one of the island’s cultural landmarks. To mark the occasion the season kicks off with a luminous solo exhibition by acclaimed American artist Victor Matthews. The Light of Sand invites visitors to experience the serenity, rhythm, and radiance that define both Matthews’ work and Saint Barthélemy itself.
For over fifteen years, Space Gallery has been an island staple — a destination where art, travel, and luxury meet. Its Gustavia gallery has become a meeting place for community and a place to discover and enjoy art - championing a dynamic roster of international artists while remaining deeply rooted in the island’s creative spirit through the local talent it respresents. The Light of Sand by Victor Matthews continues that legacy, offering an intimate dialogue between artist and place.

Known for his serene, abstract canvases, Matthews captures the quiet pulse of Saint Barth through soft tones of ivory, sand, and bone, animated by bold black lines. His paintings feel like visual meditations — calm yet alive, reflecting what he calls “the connection that exists among all living things.”
Born in Brooklyn in 1963, Matthews emerged from New York’s legendary 1980s art scene alongside Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Donald Baechler, while studying under Francesco Clemente and Brice Marden. Today, his works reside in the permanent collections of LACMA and the Boca Raton Museum of Art as well as numerous private collections.
In The Light of Sand, Matthews channels the island’s radiant light and tranquil rhythm into his most introspective series yet. Each canvas mirrors Saint Barth’s landscape — its blinding sun, shifting tides, and golden calm — distilling them into gestures of balance and presence. Like the island itself, his art invites us to slow down, breathe, and simply be. Victor Matthews solo exhibition opens Thanks giving week and his work will be on view throughout the season.
