Every year Space Gallery St Barth has something new and exciting to discover on its exhibition program, and this year is no different.

During the 2022-23 season, the gallery will present for the first time, Texan artist Christopher Martin with a survey of works entitled ‘Canopy’ launching in November and showing a selection of works from his various series, created over his 20+ year career.

Christopher plays with big scale and the beautiful European technique of Verre Églomisé which dates back to 14th century, but with a modern twist. This complex process involves painting in reverse on acrylic panels to gradually build up and produce the final image. Christopher coaxes layer upon layer of sheer pigment and water to achieve his vision — harnessing brushes, wind, heat, and gravity, to create his abstract works.

Every layer of paint has a high influence on the one behind it as opposed to a flat covering stroke. It’s often around thirty layers of paint that fuse together.” – CM

His works are often inspired by nature and it's hard not to see the influence of the Colorado landscape where he lives and works.

When you observe the veining in a slab of marble or the alternating colors in petrified wood and other natural creations, they are all inherently poetic and attuned to the laws of abstraction. Study them closely, and you’ll identify compositions of abstraction. Being surrounded by these nat- ural masterpieces in Colorado is a constant source of inspiration”.
