Dominique Rousserie: As Without, So Within As Above, So Below | St Barth

December 6 - January 14, 2012

Space SBH is pleased to present a selection of works by Dominique Rousserie for its inaugural show.

Making his art a journey between worlds, Rousserie travelled the globe making his boat a floating studio. Rousserie's deep interest in primitivism, ancient signs and spiritual belief systems led to collaborations with artists, shamans and healers in Africa, Europe, India, SOuth and North America. Studies of prehistoric art, hallucinogenic plants and contemporary animism form the foundation of his paintings that evolved into a very personal symbolism, venturing beyond postmodern relativism, in search for a universal truth that truly represents the notion of the post-colonial and globalized world we live in and yet still don’t understand.

In the words of Gerard Barrière “A precursor to his vision, his painting explores frontiers far more important than the paltry dotted lines in our atlas. Frontiers which art alone will be able to visit, cross, to push back, to abolish, when we have all since exhausted forever the joys of geographical travel. It is time to leave the world’s skin to go off in search of it’s spirit, of its still almost virginal territories where its soul and ours play freely together and dance, endlessly, their inexhaustible love.”

Space SBH has curated a show uniting different concepts of Rousserie’s universe. His molecular structure series, Japanese period and Mapping project are representative of his archetypes.

Now selected for a solo exhibition in Sao Paolo at the MuBE museum, Brazil in Spring 2012, Rousserie is part of private and museum collections worldwide.

Private viewing by appointment.
