Patrick Demarchelier: Natural Beauty

December 29 - January 31, 2019

Space St Barth recognizes the beauty and grace of Patrick Demarchelier’s world-renowned photography in his premiere St Barth exhibition this winter. The show follows his passion and inspiration around the world through his collections spanning St Barthelemy, Tanzania, Cuba, Paris, and more and is celebrated with the launch of his book Photographs – a compilation of some of his most iconic shots.

As one of the most revered photographers at the core of the fashion industry for over four decades, Demarchelier has shot covers for nearly every major fashion magazine including American, British and Paris Vogue. To date, Demarchelier has shot countless celebrities and supermodels for editorials and advertising campaigns comprised of the crème de la crème of international luxury fashion. His portfolio spans brands such as Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Gianni Versace, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Céline, Yves Saint Laurent, Lacoste, and Ralph Lauren.

Demarchelier is known for his ability to put his subjects at ease and capture their true personalities on film. “I have that one second, the moment she forgets about the camera, when I can make someone relax and become her real self. That is the moment I want to capture,” he says.

Anna Wintour, the Editor in Chief of Vogue, reflecting on Demarchelier’s unique talent, remarked “Patrick takes simple photographs perfectly, which is of course immensely difficult. Working without ornate settings, often in black-and-white, he makes attractive women look beautiful and beautiful women seem real. In Patrick’s kingdom, Cinderella could have arrived at the palace wearing Dior — or she could have worn nothing at all.”

Reinforcing that last sentiment, we witness the freedom and tranquility he, his models, and so many others feel through his iconic Nude shot in St Barthelemy for Italian Vogue in 1989. Though he has called New York City home for more than thirty years, Demarchelier finds himself most at ease in his St Barth abode both as a relaxing escape, and as a setting for his work.

Through Demarchelier’s explorations in Africa, we are privy to his effortless switch from human models to other members of the animal kingdom. He was captivated by their wild beauty as well as the challenges he faced in this unfamiliar landscape; an experience that would prove to be humbling and required a patience one might otherwise forget.

Join Space St Barth for an ineffable impression of Patrick Demarchelier’s celebrated career. Spanning works from his commissions from Vogue and Christian Dior, timeless shots of models Kate Moss and Christy Turlington, an intimate portrayal of Billy Joel and ephemeral moments captured by the artist for our collective enjoyment.
