Dates: August 10-23, 2020

Open every day from 12-6 p.m. or by appointment

“In a real sense all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be… This is the inter-related structure of reality.”

— Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail

This exhibition presents new paintings by Sophie-Alexia Joly de Lotbinière. The pieces showcased herein are presented as a series of meditative color field paintings interspersed with particle-like patterns produced by the impressions left behind by rice grains. The rice grain acts as subatomic particles both visually and behaviorally by the way they are dispersed onto and removed from the canvas once the paint has set.

The artist's intention is to create images that resonate with the principles of interdependence and the natural world as we have come to understand it through the study and language of quantum physics. By observing subatomic particles, we have come to realize that nature does not behave in fixed or predictive systems. This realization stands in stark opposition to the way in which we have been socialized to perceive the world in categorical, immutable and divided structures. More readily put, we have come to see ourselves as separate from one another, and even as superior to one another and this is the thinking that is at the root of all violence. Whilst subatomic particles are varied and not indistinguishable they ultimately behave in wave-like patterns in unison. To see reality in this light lays the groundwork for a ripened leap towards our togetherness.

Acting in congruence with the mission of this show, Lotbinière will donate 100% of the proceeds of the sale of the painting Light the way (2020) to Girls for Gender Equity (GGE). Girls for Gender Equity is an organization committed to the physical, psychological, social, and economic development of girls and women of color. Through education, organizing and physical fitness, GGE encourages communities to remove barriers and create opportunities for girls and women to live self-determined lives.
